AGM Team - Alvaro Corrales

Born in Huesca, Spain, in 1971, Alvaro began playing tennis at the age of 8. He was a young star in Aragon, a Northern region of Spain, winning all regional titles in junior and amateur categories, including the Regional Masters in 1990.

At the age of 15, he moved to Barcelona in order to train at the “Escuela de Alto Rendimiento” from the C.E. Hispano Frances, where he obtained the second place at the Spanish National Championships and, later in that year, reached the final of the Apple Bowl, Spanish international junior championships, beating, amongst others, Alberto Berasategui, who years later reached the final of the French Open and was a top-10 player.

 

He also won numerous tournaments throughout Spain, reaching a highest national ranking of 84. He was a 5-time collegiate champion at the University of Zaragoza, between 1990 and 1994, and was the runner up of the National Collegiate Championships in 1992.

His education came from the University of Zaragoza, where he received a degree in Business Administration in 1994. At the same time, he initiated his coaching career at the Real Zaragoza club de Tenis, coaching all junior and amateur teams at the club. He also belonged to the first team of the Club and competed at the Spanish First Division Championships in 1998.

 

In 1994, Alvaro spent a year in the United States, where he coached at the International Tennis Academy (ITA) in Phoenix, Arizona. He was in charge of all competitive players at the academy, including numerous college players and Meghan Shauggnessy, a player that years later was top-10 in the world. It was then when Alvaro learned the many rules that exist at the NCAA and other college organizations.

Upon his return to Spain, he was the main coach at the “Escuela de Alto Rendimiento of the Federacion Aragonesa de Tenis” where he coached the competitive group and managed the different activities of the Center.

 

 

In 1999, he started his professional activities off the tennis courts, with a management position at the Centro Natacion Helios, a sports club with more than 15 sports and where he manages the operations of the different sports (including tennis, soccer, swimming, waterpolo, track and field and many more). He is also managing the different academies that exist within the club.

 

Besides his degree in Business, Alvaro has received other certification and professional degrees, with studies in Consulting (Madrid) and in Sports Management (in Barcelona). In 2003 he received a Master in Sports Management in Zaragoza.



He has been licensed as monitor and coach in tennis and padel, and is a licensed referee by the Spanish Federation, having acted as referee in the main ATP-Tour event in Barcelona (Conde de Godo), in Madrid (Grand Prix) and in the Barcelona 92’ Olympic Games.
