Admissions – Important rules and regulations

If you want to participate in college athletics, you must meet certain requirements. The most important rules are:

  • You must maintain amateur status
  • Have a good and competitive level in your sport
  • To have a High-School degree
  • To complete the required tests SAT and TOEFL

NCAA

The NCAA has an independent organization called NCAA Clearinghouse) dedicated to evaluate prospective student-athletes. Prospective student-athletes have to be cleared from this organization in order to be eligible to compete.

In order to complete the process, prospective student-athletes have to send their High School transcripts in the original language and in English, and also the SAT Score report from College Board. It will also be mandatory to fill out an amateurism questionnaire to confirm the amateur status.

  • In Division I the SAT Score and the High School Scores (core courses) are used in the calculation of the grade-point average. Better results in High School could decrease the SAT Score requirement. The minimum SAT Score depends on a different country sliding scale which states the score required for a High School GPA.

  • In Division II there is no sliding scale. The minimum core grade-point average is 2.000 (American 4 GPA Base Scale). The minimum SAT score is 820 (verbal and math sections only) and the minimum SAT sum score is 68.

  • NCAA Division III – There are not any athletic scholarships in Division III but universities offer many grants, academic scholarships, loans and financial aid.

NAIA

NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) – Schools that belong to the NAIA do not have such strict requirements as the NCAA has. Age is not an issue but prospective student-athletes must meet two of the followings three requirements

  • SAT Score above 860

  • A 2.00 GPA in High School

  • To be on the top 50% of the graduating class. In other words, to have better high-school grades than 50% of the same-year class.
